Pressure on loading rates

Although shiploading systems have traditionally been regarded as technically inferior to ship discharging systems, the upsurge in coal demand is reviving interest in this area to increase loading rates. The traditional design of offshore shiploader encompasses a choice of three possible basic solutions, each of which can be modified to suit the application, i.e. long travelling loader, radial travelling or quadrant loader and the dual linear travelling design. However, these designs tend to relate to high throughput large bulker terminals, whereas for smaller vessels and barges a far simpler, and more effective design can be developed. In its basic form, a loader can be a simple fixed conveyor line which elevates the cargo into the ship or barge, does not long travel or slew and relies on the barge to be moved to ensure correct filling.
