Most wine visionaries do not get their ideas from taking college classes, but from lessons learned getting their hands dirty in vineyards or wine cellars. Such is the case for Jerry Lohr, owner and president of J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines, who began his career working on his family's farm in South Dakota. It was during those early formative years that Lohr would get his first glimpse at the unique characteristics of soil, climate, and other intricate forces of nature that have a huge impact on whichtype of crop to plant in each particular site.
