Gonad development in Acipenser persicus and Huso huso sturgeon fish.

Gonad development in 54 Acipenser persicus and Huso huso sturgeon fish is described. Mean oocyte diameter of A. persicus at 1, 2 and 6 years was 11.9+or-2.6, 111.7+or-31 and 144.9+or-44.9 micro and Huso huso 10.9+or-2.5, 147.7+or-24.4 and 163.6+or-20.8 micro , respectively. Mean sac sperm diameter in A. persicus was 13.8+or-2.4 micro , 34.2+or-11 micro and 54.2+or-21 micro and Huso huso 14.5+or-3.9 micro , 43.8+or-9.4 micro and 94.3+or-54.1 micro , respectively. Histology suggested that 6 year old A. persicus are in stage II of sexual maturity and the size of oocytes and number of sperm increases during the stages of sexual maturation. The results suggest that differences in reproductive development and environment may account for structural differences in gonads of various species.
