Residents have paid to clean up the Wingate Road Municipal Incinerator and Landfill Superfund Site for more than 20 years but have seen no results, according to one citizen activist.Denise Cobb, president of Second Chance Inc., a nonprofit organization that follows federal funding for the community, said the found out that the Fort Lauderdale government has billed the community for cleaning up the landfill. People are getting angry and want the city to use that money to clean the landfill, she told SWR.The remedy for the landfill is a cap, according to government officials. However, the community wants the toxins removed or an impermeable seal, Legal Aid of Broward County Inc. lawyer Sharon Bourassa said. But the state wants to keep the plastic liner, what Bourassa calls "the horse and buggy of our time," instead of using newer technology.
