Samancor Manganese (BHP Billiton has a 60% interest and Anglo American 40% in it) is theworld’s largest vertically integrated producer of manganese ore and alloys. The ore productionfacilities are situated in South Africa (Hotazel mines in Northern Cape province) and Australia(GEMKO mine in the country’s north). Around 20% of the material produced is used for in-houseproduction of manganese alloys at Metalloys (Meyerton, South Africa) and TEMCO plants(Tasmania, Australia). The rest is exported to China, Japan, India, South Korea and Europe. TheGroup’s ore capacities are much above the requirements of its alloys production, so the free marketof manganese ore is of great importance to the producer.
