摘要

It is easy to forget the danger. Road injuries killed between 1.25 and 1.3 million people across the world in 2015, according to the latest statistics from the World Health Organisation. All the other causes of death in the top 10 were related to physical conditions, illness and disease. After more than a century of using cars they still pose one of the most lethal threats to human life that we know. Why? 'This is something I have been thinking about for most of my life,' Ben Hamilton-Baillie tells Highways. He is famous for being the man who coined the term shared space, which has become the most controversial concept in modern highways design.
