Single bid placed for new gas-for-fertilizer allocation in Pakistan

Engro Chemicals was the only bidder in a Pakistan government tender for a long-term gas feedstock contract,which will allow the fertilizer producer to build a new 1.3 million tpa urea plant plus associated ammonia production facilities.The tender,held in early December 2006,was for the supply of 100 million cubic feet per day(mmcfd)of gas from the Qadirpur gas field.The company offered Rs.101 million(1.6 milliion)to secure the rights to the gas supply at a meeting held on 11 December 2006 under the Chairmanship of Ministry of Industries and Production Minister Jahangir Khan Tareen.This is the first time that investors have been asked to guarantee gas supplies before they are given the go-ahead to build an urea plant.Severe gas shortages and growing energy needs have forced the government to devote the Qadirpur gas field to the fertilizer industry.
