Ahead of the curve

Materials suppliers have a successful track record in partnering, and the ongoing Collaborative Research Programme (CRP) with Highways England continues to yield tangible results in the use of more efficient and effective pavement materials. The CRP was established in the 1980s but was recently in the spotlight when Eurobitume UK, Highways England and the Mineral Products Association (MPA) were awarded the 'Delivery' category [Digital Transformation) accolade in the Highways England Awards for 2019-20. The award was made for a sub-task report of the 2018-19 collaborative research project, delivered by AECOM, on the next generation of asphalt materials - Promoting Safety and Quality with Automation in Road Construction. The study provided further understanding of how innovative technologies can assist in increasing the automation level of conventional quality control and assurance test methods, with the aim of providing a safer and more efficient quality management process.
