Forced-Air Warming During Pediatric Surgery: A Randomized Comparison of a Compressible With a Noncompressible Warming System

Perioperative active wanning is paramount to overcoming the common problem of hypothermia, particularly in pediatric patients. However, the process is often challenging in this particular population. Researchers conducted this comparative study between traditional (compressible mattresses, group BH; Pediatric Uhder-body, Bair Hugger; 3M, St Paul, Minn) and alternative (noncompressible mattress systems, group MM; Baby/Kleinkinddecke of MoeckWarming-Systems, art. 902; Moeck & Moeck GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) forms of forced-air warming systems used for perioperative active warming in pediatric surgical patients. (The groups were named using the initials of the applied system manufacturers.) Li this randomized study, pediatric patients younger than 2 years who were scheduled for elective surgery were placed in 1 of 2 groups preoperatively on forced-air wanning mattresses. Their body temperature was measured using various probes. The mean core temperature of patients in the BH group increased substantially, whereas temperatures of MM patients remained stable. Furthermore, although the need for temperature down-regulation occurred more often in the BH group, skin temperatures in the MM group were all lower. No perioperative adverse effects related to either type of warming device were noted.
