摘要

Thyroid hormones [THs: tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)] play an important role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). TH deficiency can cause an important condition called "cretinism", characterized by mental retardation and impaired development of the neurological system [1]. In addition, TH deficiency during critical brain developmental stages causes retarded maturation of glial cells and neurons, abnormal spread of dendritic appendages, low synaptic density, myelination defects and a low number of olfactory bulbus and hippocampus cells [2]. TH shows its effect in gene expression. It has been proven that some brain genes are regulated by TH [3].
