Adolescent abuse of pharmaceutical opioids raises questions about prescribing and prevention

PHARMACEUTICAL OPIOID USE AND ABUSE ARE hot topics. They should be, as the consequences in terms of addiction and overdose are severe. Adolescence is clearly a prime time of exposure as indicated by Meier et al,1 and the prevalence of nonmedical use of pharmaceutical opi-oids is disconcertingly high, with a subset apparently abusing their own opioids, as shown by McCabe et al.
