POVERTY-RELATED DISPARITIES IN EARLY DE-velopment, school readiness, and educational achievement represent a major public health crisis.In 2011,48% of fourth-grade children in low-income families in the United States read at the below-basic level compared with only 18% of children from families with more resources.2 A recent instrumental variable analysis demonstrated that each dollar 10 000 reduction in household income is associated with a half standard deviation reduction in child educational achievement.
