Behind the populist veil

As I write, at October's end, the commons has still to return from its summer recess, although the Lords have been labouring on for some weeks. So Westminster has been fairly quiet as far as transport matters are concerned. The main drama has been elsewhere, at Hatfield for instance, where another rail disaster has caused alarm. I have written about rail safety before and have nothing more to add now except to notice two things.
