A clear direction

Originally issued in 2001, TD 25/01 is part of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. It applies directly to motorways and trunk roads in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its primary objective is clear: to ensure an optimum level of safety. Recently amended with a much clearer clause on how the Standard should be implemented, it now reads: "This Standard should be used forthwith on all maintenance contracts on trunk roads, including motorways, on safety grounds unless there are very good reasons to the contrary..." We welcome this clear direction for such an important Standard and urge increased adherence to it, not only on trunk roads but also on local authority roads, which comprise 97 percent of the road network.
