AMID rising consumer prices for dairy products and a fall in prices paid to farmers, eight major dairy processors in South Africa could be forced to pay penalties in excess of US 14.5 million dollar, after the country's Competition Commission established that they were involved in fixing milk prices. They include Clover, Parmalat, Nestle, Ladismith Cheese, Woodlands Dairy, Lancewood and Milkwood Dairy. The commission recommended in December that the competition tribunal determine the cases of the alleged offenders, whom it accused of distorting the country's dairy industry, following an investigation that started in February 2005. The respondents risked an administrative penalty of up to 10% of their annual turnover.
