摘要

Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) - is calling for more action to replace inefficient lighting in Europe and provides information to increase awareness about the issues and explain the solutions. At present approximately one third of Europe's roads and motorways are still being lit using cheap but inefficient 1960's technology: the so-called mercury vapour lamps. These lamps consume large amounts of electricity during their lifetime, creating a cost burden both for local authorities and tax payers while producing high CO2 emissions. Figures show that if these mercury vapour lamp and gear systems were replaced by the latest lighting technology, City Councils would save up to 700 million Euros in running costs per year and Europe would reduce its CO2 emissions by 3.5 million tons per year, making a big step forward towards reaching its Kyoto targets.
