Building a better network for Birmingham

Since the Government's Spending Review provoked a tightening of public purse strings, investment in the UK's infrastructure has been threatened by continued economic uncertainty. Yet, vital highways maintenance and improvement projects must be completed to maintain the integrity of the country's road network. When it came to a major restructuring programme in one of the country's largest cities affecting one of Europe's busiest transport systems, balancing the needs of local authorities, transport providers and road users while also maximising budgets required a particularly innovative strategic approach. Here Mark Holland Commercial Manager for the project's principal contractor, Bardon Contracting (part of Aggregate Industries UK), takes a closer look at the challenges involved in building a brighter future for Birmingham.
