Collaboration is key when it comes to flooding

The recent and probably still ongoing flooding problems in Somerset are creating many headaches and difficulties for the local population, who, although very much aware of the likelihood of being affected by extreme rainfall have had to endure unprecedented levels of inundation into their property and land. They have raised their anger against the public authorities with the Environment Agency being targeted for the way it is perceived to have managed the area's balanced drainage systems in recent times. The tack of ongoing maintenance including dredging of drainage channels and watercourses and a focus on protecting the natural environment rather than infrastructure and property are seen as a reason why the problems have persisted over many weeks. Despite resources being deployed including massive over pumping of flooded areas they consider that not enough has been done.
