Ian Smith, programme manager for Highways England's health and safety division, discusses the work that is being done to improve the safety of road workers. With the marked increase in construction and maintenance to deliver the government's Road Investment Strategy, ensuring the health, safety and welfare of road workers is top priority for Highways England. In support of its Road Worker Safety Strategy and its 'Aiming for Zero' ambition Highways England is working in close joint partnership with its delivery partners/suppliers who maintain its strategic road network. Working through its Road Worker Safety Forum (RoWSaF), it has achieved a significant improvement in the safety of its road workers over the last few years, as a result of innovation and collaborative working with industry partners. Driven by a real commitment to change, a number of key innovations designed to improve road worker safety have been developed, tested and introduced.
