摘要

The Ranty Highwayman is a chartered civil engineer who works in a local highways department. In his latest column he talks about the importance of considering people when designing streets. It's not about pedestriamsation, it's about people You know that TV and Radio's Alan Partridge is dead against the pedestrianisation of Norwich City Centre - although I'll leave you to look up the context in which he said it. It's not exactly pedestrianisation, but Norwich has actually been consulting on changes to remove general traffic from some of the city core, although not the full-blown pedestrianisation which Alan sometimes has on his mind. Pedestrianisation isn't for everyone (and it's not the end game by any means), although the naysayers are (and I am generalising) not the end users; they are the people who maintain that our town centres can only be viable if we allow motors to dominate. You know, because passing trade is always motorised. We know that pedestrians spend the most money over time and so it is high time that we listened to our customers to see what they want.
