Resurgent skipjack tuna prices could rise higher, industry fears

SKIPJACK tuna prices in Bangkok have jumped back to their highest level this year as limited supplies of the fish put pressure on values. The price increase defies expectations from traders earlier in the year that values would decline in the second half of 2011. Bangkok landed skipjack tuna is now priced at USDl 900 per tonne at the time of going to press, up from USDl 700/tonne in July, as limited catches, largely as a result of the ban on the use of fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the Western and Central Pacific, reduces the available supply of the fish.
