Prospect of huge California almond crop fails to bring market down

CALIFORNIAN inventories of almonds are running out and the new crop is significantly delayed, while reasonable demand is still to be fulfilled in all the major buying regions. These factors combined with the Californian shippers' strong position aftera good year of sales suggest a firm price trend may continue at least in the short term, despite the bumper crop expectations. This year's California almond crop is pegged at 1.95 million lbs (compared with 1.64 million lbs in 2010), but delays of two to three weeks to the harvest will put on a squeeze on the pipeline. Growers in the south of the state were expected to begin shaking trees this week.
