Mistral

The Mistral is a very short-range fire-and-forget, infrared-guided missile developed by France's Matra for air defense against low-flying supersonic fighters, helicopters, and antiship missiles. It was initially known as SATCP, for Sol Air a Tres Court Portee—Surface-to-Air Very Short Range). In 2000, Matra introduced the new Mistral 2 version. The Mistral system is configured in a number of launcher versions besides the basic manportable version. These include several multiple launcher configurations including a manual model for armored vehicles and shelters (Albi); a turreted launcher (Sadral); a simple naval platform (Simbad) for protection of surface vessels; and a helicopter-mounted model (AATCP) for the air-to-air mission.
