THAILAND'S summer pineapple crop is coming to an end and some packers have already shut down their facilities for annual maintenance. But despite early forecasts that this year's fruit production would come up short, industry sources claim processorsare satisfied with the available supply. In the opening months of this year, canning companies were frantically buying up any pineapple available with raw material prices hitting the unseasonably high level of TBH7.0 per kg (USD0.22) (FOODNEWS 14 January) as the winter harvest provided less than some processors were expecting and there were concerns that there would not be enough fruit to meet existing orders.
