Type 91 Kin-SAM

The Type-91 Kin-SAM, originally called Keiko, is Japan's first indigenously developed man-portable SAM. Initial R&D began in 1979, and the program transitioned to engineering development in 1988. Procurement funding began in 1991, and the first deployments were in FY94; over 330 launchers were acquired. A new mobile pedestal-mounted version is also being developed, designated the Type 93 point defense missile system, mounted on a Koh-kidohsha 1.5-ton truck with an associated radar and fire control system. Procurement of the Type 93 began in the FY94 budget. An improved version called Kin-SAM-2 Kai with imaging IR guidance has been in production since 2007.
