The certified emission reduction (CER) market, which largely collapsed late last year, sank further towards zero. The 2013 contract closed at ?0.36/t CO2 equivalent (CO2e) on 29 January, down by ?0.04/t CO2e from 28 December. The CER discount to EU allowances (EUAs) almost halved in January because of weakening allowance prices. The spread closed at ?3.62/t CO2e on 29 January, down by around 50pc from ?6.30/t CO2e on 28 December. The dis- count will widen again if back-loading is implemented in the EU ETS, as the measure will only support the price of EUAs.
