Australia unveils CO2 tax repeal bill

Australia’s recently elected Liberal-National coalition govern-ment on 13 November started the legislative process to repeal the country’s existing CO2 tax. The move is one of a series of legislative acts following the administration’s rise to power that will limit the country’s funding to tackle climate change and scale back Australia’s international engagement on the issue. Prime minister Tony Abbott introduced the legislation to abolish the former Labor government’s CO2 tax, stating that it should be the first economic reform of the current parliament (AGE, November, pp13-14).
