A DISEASE THAT affects beef cattleand other ruminants called Johne'sdisease can act as a silent threat onOntario farms - often, no early signsof infection are seen. Now, aUniversity of Guelph researcherhopes to learn more about thebacteria responsible for Johne'sdisease, so she can help develop earlydetection tools. Prof. Lucy Mutharia of theDepartment of Molecular andCellular Biology is researchingMycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP) - the bacterium that causesJohne's disease. She'wants to betterunderstand how it grows in and out ofanimal cells, so it can be betterdiagnosed and controlled.
