Beijing tells carriers: get more competitive

China has stepped up its support and planning for the country's shipping industry by introducing its first nationwide guidelines, designed to cut the deficit in maritime service trade and improve the international competitiveness of Chinese carriers. The blueprint's aims are that by 2020, China's carriers should have made significant gains in guaranteeing the transport of important cargoes including crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to the guidelines, published this month by the state council, or the cabinet. The country will take proactive approaches to develop the fleets carrying crude, liquefied natural gas (LNG), containers, roll on-roll off cargoes and 'special' goods.
