July Capacity Addition Overview

July was marked with low capacity addition rate, while the new equipment commissioning was mainly focused to replace outdated or uncompetitive units. According to the Metal Expert database, July nominal capacity addition (excluding China) was follows: 1 million tpy of concentrate, 600,000 tpy of pellets, 1.6 million tpy of crude steel, 1.2 million tpy of billets and 300,000 tpy of HR flats. In July the Syrian steel producer EMMAR Steel Industries commissioned a new 50-tonne EAF to enhance efficiency and environmental performance of its plant is Homs. The new 400,000 tpy EAF replaced an outdated EOF technology (1 million tpy) coupled with mini-BF (300,000 tpy), while an existing LF and a billet CCM were modified to work with the new furnace.
