Tight supply, firm demand lift China's Cr prices

Reduced spot availability following output cuts, particularly in Inner Mongolia, and firmer demand from the stainless steel industry have lifted Chinese prices for ferro-chrome this month and forward shipments for chrome ore during February-March. Argus last assessed the range for high-carbon ferrochrome at 6,600-6,800 yuan/t ($1,020-1,050/t) ex-works yesterday, up from Yn6,350-6,600/t ex-works on 7 January and Yn6,250-6,450/t ex-works on 31 December. Prices for 50-55pc South African charge chrome rose to $0.75-0.76/lb cif yesterday from $0.71-0.72/lb cif on 7 January, driven by higher demand and bid prices from Chinese buyers.
