Machining or shaping * until now, this alternative has generally come down on the side of machining in the production of spur gears because of its reliability and precision. Now, trials have confirmed that it is possible to shape gear teeth (even of large gears) to ready-to-install quality standards, by rolling. By contrast with machining, this offers a number of advantages. Thus, the flanks of rolled gears are harder and, as a result, more resistant to wear than their machined counterparts. In addition, the flow of the grain is more even and the material more efficiently used. In the future, it can be reckoned that rolling will increasingly be used for gear tooth shaping.
