Two weather diaries from Northern England, 1779-1807: the journals of John Chipchase and Elihu Robinson

John Chipchase (1747-1816) and Elihu Robinson (1734-1809) were both active members of the Society of Friends in the north of England, Chipchase at Stockton-on-Tees (County Durham) and Robinson at Eaglesfield, near Cockermouth (Cumberland). Chipchase ran a school in his town, where he specialized in teaching the art of navigation, having studied with William Emerson (1701-1782), a distinguished mathematician who lived in his locality. Robinson was a prosperous yeoman farmer, who in his earlier years had some mining and business interests; he was a mentor of the young scientist John Dalton (1766-1844), with whom he shared a love of meteorology and kept up a correspondence. Neither Chipchase's nor Robinson's manuscript weather diary has previously been published.
