Youth Sexuality in the Context of HIV/AIDS in South Africa

The sample included 400 male and 400 female 16 or 17 year-olds; 400 were from a rural area, all from the Limpopo Province, and 400 from urban areas, 100 from Mitchell's Plain (Cape Town), 100 Soweto (Johannesburg), 100 from East London, and 100 from Pretoria and New Brighton (Port Elizabeth) (50 each). The educational back ground of the participants were 60% secondary school, 5% vocational training, 15% completed primary school, 15% incomplete primary education, and 5% no schooling. Slightly more than half (53%) were 16 years and 47% were 17 years old.
