Oil and gas drilling is a major consumer of tungsten in theform of tungsten carbide. The global drilling rig count actu-ally picked up very slightly in August, Baker Hughes datashow, after declining month-on-month since February. InAugust, the worldwide rig count stood at 1,050, compared to1,030 in July and 2,125 in February.The largest falls in the rig count since the beginning of theyear have come in North America, with the US rig countdropping from 791 in January to 250 in August, a fall of68pc, while the count in Canada dropped from 249 in Febru-ary to 18 in June, before recovering slightly to 53 in August.
