Despite a 20pc increase in the production quota for the first half of 2021, output of tungsten concentrates in China is on course to increase only slightly to 72,000t W, from just under 71,500t W last year. But concentrate feedstock availability remains tight owing to enhanced supervision of mining activity and squeezed margins earlier in the year. It is likely that concentrates production will rise in the final four months of 2021 as producers take advantage of the run-up in tungsten prices. European mining company W Resources increased its tungsten concentrate output from its Spanish La Parrilla mine in July, having regained access to higher-grade ore areas in late June.
