Global sales of new vehicles increased by 25pc to 18.8mn units in the first quarter of this year, compared to 15.0mn in the same period of 2020, indicating a strong recovery in the automotive sector from the Covid-19-related problems of a year ago. However, the market still has some way to go to get back to peak levels - vehicle sales in January-March 2021 were still 6pc down on the same period in 2019. China’s vehicle sales and production fell in June as a result of an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage and a spike in raw material costs. June vehicle sales fell by 5.3pc on the month and by 12.4pc on the year to 2.015mn, according to the China association of automobile manufacturers (CAAM).
