Metal futures: Copper, nickel hit highs

Copper and nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) surpassed recent highs in today's official morning ses- sion, but most base metals dipped amid a mixed macroeco- nomic picture. The three-month LME nickel contract was the biggest mover in outright terms with the futures contract climbing by 2.1pc to $17,254/t. Nickel has drawn support from a surg- ing Chinese steel market in recent weeks and that strength persisted today, with the Argus ICX index for 62pc Fe iron ore fines rising by $2.80/dry metric tonne (dmt) to $160.30/ dmt.
