IEQ at Millennium's End: In a Word, 'Paradoxical'

If we had to choose one word to sum up the IEQ field as we enter this new millennium, it would have to be "paradoxical." It's a field awash in crossed signals and mixed messages. For example: 1. Despite increased knowledge about the link between indoor environmental conditions and adverse health effects, many, if not most, people remain uninterested in improving indoor conditions. 2. Building owners and managers who say they need to maintain profits, still bypass relatively inexpensive preventive measures, and, in a classic case of penny-wise and pound-foolish, leave themselves open to remediation efforts that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
