Global steel demand up 5.8pc this year: Worldsteel

Global steel demand will increase by 5.8pc this year to 1.87bn t, after declining by 0.2pc last year, as recovery continues in developed and developing economies, according to industry organisation Worldsteel. Chinese steel demand will moderate, increasing by 3pc compared with 9.1pc last year, as the effect of 2020 stimulus — in the form of infrastructure investment, relaxed control over the real estate sector and tax reductions — subsides. Worldsteel is already noticing a switch from investment-led growth to consumer-led, which has led to strong demand increases in the last few years, but could mean slower growth ahead.
