Cold comfort

At the end of September 2014, ClassNK released the results of its investigation into the 8,110TEU MOL Comfort. The Post-Panamax vessel suffered a crack amidships and broke apart at sea off the coast of Yemen on 17 June 2013-with the aft section sinking on 27 June and the bow on 11 July. The incident garnered particular attention for the fact that vessel was relatively new, having been built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 2008 using ultra high strength steel with a yield strength of 470MPa.
