Watchdog algorithm sniffs out dangerous cargo

Last year Hapag-Uoyd discovered 2,620 cases of incorrectly declared dangerous goods which it subsequently prevented from being stowed aboard its ships. It is the first time the box-ship operator has been able to provide exact figures. In total, it investigated over 162,000 cases which were flagged up by new watchdog software that continuously examines manifest data to identify suspicious cargo. Dangerous goods that are declared imprecisely, incorrectly or not at all could pose a major risk to crews, ships, the environment and other cargo on board.
