Ultimately it depends on the candidate, but I would suggest: 1) The training needs to be both theoretical and issues-led, i.e. history, regulations involved, impacts on environment and wider society, future trends, case studies. Site visits are also important. 2) The trainer needs to be technically competent, preferably with hands-on experience of the subject in question, and willing to interact with the audience. 3) The method of presentation should take advantage of new interactive learning tools. 4) More time should be allowed for Q&A sessions and make them less formal. 5) If presentation material is to be provided after the training then it should capture and summarise the main points and important terminology. Don't expect newcomers to understand industry jargon.
