1. In Octoberthe IMarEST was granted Observer Status as an international non-governmental organisation at the London Convention and Protocol (Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter 1972). Its objective is to promote the effective control of marine pollution and to take practicable steps to prevent pollution of the sea caused by dumping of wastes and other matter. 2. A round table that explored the safety and sustainability of shipping and offshore activities in the Arctic high lighted that knowledge gaps of this delicate environment were a key issue. A lack of data underlines the requirement for long-term, sustained observations. A report and whitepaper will follow shortly. 3. A round table on Big Data aimed to define the term in the context of the marine sector, identify sector-specific challenges, explore potential applications, and discuss cross-sector synergies all with a view to establishing a way forward.
