We live in interestiong times here in the UK. Our political leadership is currently influx, meaning that the decisions of previous governments are under scrutiny-with the possibility that existing projects may be scrapped to make way for new ones that better match the current ethos. A topic very much in the headlines here is Trident, our nuclear deterrent submarine-launched missile programme. This is an ongoing scheme, which calls for nuclear warheads to be carried by 14 active US Navy Ohio-class submarines and four Royal Navy (RN) Vanguard-class submarines underthe original concept. The UK renewal programme, estimated to require funding of ￡15-20 billion, would see a new class of RN submarines brought in to replace the ageing Vanguard submarines.
