A DAY IN THE LIFE

06:00 I'm woken up by my cat, who is a surprisingly reliable alarm clock when demanding her breakfast. Next it's the turn of our three rescue rabbits who need fresh hay and water, after which I have breakfast watching a little bit of the news. 07:00 I cycle to Chelsea Technologies Group (CTG) on my Brompton. It's a beautiful cycle through Bushy Park and past Hampton Court Palace, especially in the summer months. 07:45 While the day at CTG officially starts at 8am, I like to get a little head start and check my emails, review my laboratory bookfrom the previous day and make a plan for the day ahead while it's still relatively quiet. CTG specialises in the design and manufacture of in-situ sensors for oceanographic research, maritime applications, oil and gas, freshwater environmental monitoring and process control. There are over 30 people on site and in my R&D role work closely with the production, engineering and sales teams. I'm always working on several projects, which means every day is varied and interesting. Most of my work is centred around the design and use of fluorescence sensors, with a particular emphasis on ultraviolet (UV) excitation and emission wavelengths.
