One of the biggest advantages of being part of the IMarEST is the chance to engage with other members who share common interests. There are numerous platforms to do so, ranging from branch meetings to themed networking events, but perhaps the most understated opportunity comes in the form of the institute's Special Interest Groups. "These groups are open to all IMarEST members and have been developed to enable the creation and sharing of knowledge in a specialist field," says Dr Bev MacKenzie, technical and policy director. "More importantly, they are a great place to explore ideas that you are passionate about with others that share and challenge your views." SIGs have a number of aims, including advancing the knowledge, expertise and status of members working in the field; acting as a distribution point for up-to-date, relevant information; expanding the network of parties interested in the field; hosting and developing specialist conferences, seminars and other events; producing relevant information and position papers; and providing support to industry newcomers. "We also provide impartial, timely and technically sound information to governments and intergovernmental organisations," MacKenzie (pictured) informs.
