On Jan.20,President Joseph Biden signed an executive order temporarily halting the issuance of new oil and gas drilling permits,leases,and easements on US federal lands for 60 days.US Interior Department acting secretary Scott de la Vega said that the temporary halt is necessary for a"targeted and time-limited"review of recent decisions.The Interior Department has the option to extend or modify the suspension order at the end of this 60-day review.US oil output on federal lands and waters averaged 2.7MM b/d in 2019,representing 22% of domestic production.
