EDITORIAL

Welcome to the seventh year of the Journal of Applied Arts and Health (JAAH). As I reflect over the eighteen individual issues produced prior to this one, I am struck by the diversity of articles that have been published. I of course get to see many more submissions that do not meet the rigorous review process. I am encouraged by the greater confidence that the field enjoys and the diversity of practices located under the applied arts and health umbrella. However, I am still aware of the need for researchers to more fully explore additional variant understandings of evidence. I continue to look for deeper understanding of what makes art (in all its forms) particularly powerful in motivating people into thought and action. In this regard I am encouraged to see a growing awareness of 'art-based research' within the field, although there still seems to be some confusion in researchers' understanding of this term by using it interchangeably with 'arts-based research' (plural form), which appears to offer less precision of purpose and methodology. The term 'art-based research' promotes the idea of a community representing all the art forms employing artistic intelligences, and within our field we include all applied arts professions.
