Decarbonizing aviation will be the top priority for the airline sec- tor in the wake of the pandemic. But government support is needed to scale up plants for making sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as well as new technologies for carbon sequestration. Those themes dominated a panel on how to promote sustainable avia- tion at the Atlantic Council’s virtual Global Energy Forum this week. The session focused on the US, where President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday to rejoin the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Since domestic aviation emissions are includ- ed under that accord, SAF stakeholders are hopeful the Biden presidency will provide incentives for ramping up commerciali- zation eforts (JFI Nov.27’20).
